Next gen flash storage modules for space missions with a large memory capacity, data security and rapid processing will be developed the Polish company SYDERAL for the European Space Agency (ESA).

The Flash Memory Module (FMM) project involves the development of the FPGA module controlling Flash mass storage and protecting against data loss due to space radiation. The project is implemented in cooperation with the European Space Agency, and SYDERAL Polska is the main contractor, the company representatives report.

The solution allows to protect the stored and read data, enables uninterrupted storage despite the sudden blocking of Flash memory, and data recovery even if one of the memory modules has been damaged or temporarily locked.

The project has entered the second, commercial phase of development, in which the user's requirements are addressed. The user is RUAG Space, the company that will help determine the requirements and participate in technical inspections of the project. The total project budget is nearly 0.4 million euros, and the end of work is planned for the second quarter of 2023.

In the first phase of the project, completed in December 2021, the speed of all interfaces was doubled (to 200 MHz), and communication with the module adapted to existing technical requirements for mass storage for the ESA's ARIEL mission.
