The Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University launches the innovative CogNeS Doctoral School that combines social and cognitive sciences as well as neurosciences. This is the only doctoral program of its kind in this part of Europe.

CogNeS is an innovative education program based on two pillars: interdisciplinary approach and internationalisation. Its goal is to prepare doctoral students to conduct independent research concerning social and cognitive sciences as well as neurosciences using the latest methods and technologies, such as neuroimaging or TMS.

According to the representatives of the Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University, due to the rapid technological progress and growing level of knowledge, it is necessary to go beyond narrow specializations and be open to methods associated with various disciplines. As part of the CogNeS Doctoral School, the institute cooperates with the Jagiellonian University Medical College, the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology and the Department of Cognitive Science at the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University.

Dr. Michał Wierzchoń, the project leader and director of the Institute of Psychology at the Jagiellonian University says that this enables the free flow of knowledge and people interested in broadly understood brain research.

"We focus on cooperation because science is a team effort. The education program has been designed to encourage crossing traditional discipline and field divisions" - adds the project leader.

CogNeS, designed to develop competence in the fields of social sciences and neuroscience, is based on a team-work model supported by individual tutoring.

The project not only enables the participation of doctoral students in classes taught by foreign lecturers, including visiting professors, but also gives them the opportunity to participate in international projects. The program provides support for foreign academic internships in order to improve the research methods, as well as trips to summer schools and foreign conferences.

All students qualified for the program receive a scholarship and a budget for foreign trips.

The Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University is a leading research and teaching centre. It currently implements more than 60 grants worth over PLN 30 million, its researchers publish in leading international journals. The institute received a distinguished rating from the State Accreditation Commission. It is a unit of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University, awarded the prestigious scientific category A+.

CogNeS Doctoral School will be financed by the National Centre for Research and Development and the European Funds. More information is available at: cognes.psychologia.uj.edu.pl.
