Car chargers in lamp posts - the idea of Lublin University of Technology and PGE Dystrybucja

Lublin University of Technology and PGE Dystrybucja want to cooperate on the development of a new charging system for electric vehicles that will use chargers installed in street lights. The projects is expected to be completed in 2020.

"Poland now has about 130 electric car charging stations, Germany has 125,000. Electric mobility is already a fact and it will grow, like the development of photovoltaics and the Internet. It is a natural process of civilization and technology" - Rector of Lublin University of Technology Prof. Piotr Kacejko emphasised at a press conference on Thursday.

"Among the various solutions that concern electric vehicle charging systems, we want to propose one that has many innovative features. We put it in lamp posts" - added Kacejko.

Wojciech Lutek, CEO of PGE Dystrybucja, emphasized that in the future electricity would be the primary car fuel. "Together with Lublin University of Technology we are launching a groundbreaking project related to electromobility. I think that with charging stations installed in electric poles, we will create a unique program in the country, which will allow us to freely travel with electric cars" - said Lutek.

According to the project assumptions, Lublin University of Technology will prepare technical solutions for the new chargers, while PGE Dystrybucja will develop software that will allow to integrate chargers with the control systems of the power supply operator. Charges for electricity used to charge cars will be added to the bills paid at the driver\'s place of residence.

The cost of the project is PLN 2.9 million, PLN 2.6 million of which will come from the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020. Co-financing agreement with the National Centre for Research and Development is expected to be signed in the coming days - Kacejko announced.

Car batteries are going to be charged with a maximum power of 25 kW. The full charge of a 30 kWh battery will take about 70 minutes - the project assumes.

Chargers will be equipped with three types of plugs, allowing to connect to different types of electric cars. It will be a two-way connection to also enable energy return from car batteries to the system. Thanks to the difference in electricity prices at various times of day, this solution will allow drivers to get additional savings.

The cost of one charger is estimated at about 40 thousand zlotys. The project authors do not intend to manufacture charger. They predict that charger designs will be available to interested manufacturers on an open license basis. (PAP)
