Wroclaw University of Science and Technology students will compete in SAE Aero Design West in the US

The aircraft named "Vratislavia", designed by students of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, will start in the annual international flight competition SAE Aero Design West in the United States. The competition will be held on 10-12 March in Fort Worth, Texas.

Students from the Academic Aviation Club JetStream team at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology will take part in the prestigious international competition SAE Aero Design West for the ninth time - told PAP Michał Ciepielski from the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology press office.

The task of competing teams is to build an unmanned aircraft that will lift the heaviest load in relation to the model mass. In the advanced category, in which the JetStream team\'s model will start, the task is not only to lift the load, but also to drop it from an altitude of at least 33 meters so that it lands as close as possible to the target.

"Our students have prepared the airplane called +Vratislavia+. The machine weighs nearly 3.5 kg, its wingspan is almost 3.8 meters and it is capable of lifting a 12 kg load" - said Ciepielski.

He added that the competition was designed to simulate humanitarian aid drop. "Aircrafts in this category are the most advanced, and last year organizers changed the rules, introducing additional difficulties. Student aircrafts must, among other things, drop their load not once, but several times during the flight" - explained Ciepielski.

Last year the JetStream team from Wrocław won second place in the advanced category. The competition has two more categories: regular and micro. In 2014, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology students won in the micro class, which was their biggest success in the competition.

SAE Aero Design competition is organised jointly by US defence company Lockheed Martin and the US space agency NASA. This prestigious competition for students from around the world is organised since 1995. The task of young engineers is to design, build and fly a remote-controlled model cargo aircraft. The team, whose aircraft lifts the greatest load in the air, with a minimum weight of the model, wins.

The competition will take place on 10-12 March in Fort Worth, Texas. 75 teams will fight for victory.
