The car built by students from Wroclaw fifth at the famous Silverstone Circuit

Wroclaw University of Technology students from the PWR Racing Team took fifth place in the overall standings of the Formula Student in England. 130 teams from more than 30 countries competed at the famous Silverstone Circuit.

Formuła Student is a competition of racing cars designed and built by students of technical universities all over Europe. The event aims to encourage innovation and provide an opportunity for training for young engineers.

First place went to the University of Stuttgart, second to Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and third to Graz University of Technology. Wroclaw University of Technology team was the best of all Polish teams, taking fifth place. The team from Bialystok University of Technology was 33rd in the overall standings, the team from Warsaw University of Technology was 95th.

The competition in the UK marked the debut of the car RT07, on which Wroclaw University of Technology students worked all year. "We owe this success to the experience gained over the last few years, and a reasonable approach to the construction of our newest car - RT07" - said Jędrzej Piasecki from PWR Racing Team. "Our vehicle did not undergo a revolution, but an evolution. We took advantage of the best solutions used in the previous cars and perfected them. That is why the RT07 is doing so well" - he added.

The event was held on Thursday 14 July - Sunday 17 July. The participants had to make it through static competitions (such as business and car construction presentations) and dynamic competitions (including acceleration test and the endurance race). Members of the PWR Racing Team had most success in 22 km Endurance competition. They took fourth place. In the car design presentation they won seventh place and in the acceleration test they were ninth.

Wroclaw car weighs 195 kg, and its support structure is a monocoque chassis built with carbon pre-preg, foam - so-called aluminium honeycomb, poliamide and epoxy resins. It is equipped with aerodynamic package, that is, front and rear wings designed to increase the vehicle traction when cornering.

"Because of a malfunction before the competition in the UK we did not have much time for training. So we could not say that we went there at 100 percent prepared. Before the German event, our drivers will have about two weeks for testing and training. Therefore, we are optimistic and we will try to win an even higher place" - emphasised Jędrzej Piasecki.

Student from PWR Racing Team will compete in August on the German Hockenheimring circuit.

The team from Wroclaw University of Technology was the first Polish team to compete in Formula Student in 2009 - in the UK - with the virtual project RT09. In the next edition of competition the team presented their first car - RT01. There are currently over 500 student teams competing in this event, including eight Polish teams. PWR Racing Team remains the leader among Polish teams. Last year they confirmed their top position, winning ninth place three times - in the competitions in England, Germany and the United States.
