Polish scientists have developed a navigation system, which will not only lead the ship on safe routes, but also suggests the manoeuvres that should be performed in the case of a collision danger. Navdec has already been installed on several ships - told PAP Dr. Piotr Borkowski from the Maritime University in Szczecin.

"Previous systems assisted navigators, Navdec goes a step further - in addition to notifying of the current situation, it also takes into account the provisions of the international sea law and indicates which the ship has priority. If there is a collision situation, it suggests a course correction safely pass the other vessels" - explained Borkowski.

Navdec was developed at the Maritime University in Szczecin. Is now being implemented by the company Sup4Nav - a spin-out of the Maritime University in Szczecin. "We have been appreciated by the European Union, we have received 50 thousand euros in the program designed for small and medium-sized enterprises Horizon 2020" - added Borkowski.

"Navdec has already been installed on several ships of different types (...) belonging to different shipowners. It is being tested, any comments from navigation staff, navigators, captains, help to improve the system" - emphasized the scientist. The system was installed, among others, on chemical tankers, ferries and sailing ships.

Borkowski emphasized that the majority of maritime accidents are caused by human error, and the navigation system developed at the Maritime University in Szczecin minimizes the risk of its occurrence, and thus the risk of collision.

"Spin-out" companies are entities created by scientific institutions or their employees in order to commercialise knowledge or technology. Sup4Nav, founded in 2013 by a team led by Professor Zbigniew Pietrzykowski consists of academic staff of the Faculty of Navigation, including the specialists in the field of navigation, transportation, mathematics, computer science, electronics and telecommunications.
