Less than five seconds to 100 km/h is the result of the car designed and built by students from Rzeszów University of Technology. In the beginning of July, for the first time they will take part in the Formula Student competition at the Silverstone circuit in the UK.

The task in the Formula Student competition is to design, build and test of a Formula 1 style racing car, in accordance with the competition regulations. The competition is divided into dynamic and static tests. The former include endurance race over a distance of 22 km. In addition, each crew member can be asked about technical issues. Students must be able to explain why they have used certain structural solutions, what they have spent money on, and how they would like to market their car.

Rzeszów car has been named Student Formula 1. It was designed in 2011 and built in 2014 by more than 20 students from the Rzeszów University of Technology as part of their activities in the Formula Student Science Club.

President of the club Bartosz Zborowski told PAP that the competition which will be held in early July in England is a "testing ground" for engineers.

"The competition is not about achieving the highest possible speed. More important are the car endurance, average speed on subsequent laps and the team’ knowledge" - he added.

Competition winner is the car in which previously unknown solutions have been applied structures. Speed and appearance are less important.

"Previously unknown solutions include using modern systems of strength calculations, kinematic and dynamic analysis in the design of the car" - emphasised Zborowski.

The car from Rzeszów weighs approx. 300 kg, has an approx. 75 hp engine and top speed of 170 km/h. The cost of the vehicle to date is almost 200 thousand zlotys and growing.

Rzeszów students have far less money than most teams in Europe. "Our rivals have several million euros at their disposal, so we will only be able to compete with them in two, maybe three years" - said the president of the student club at Rzeszów University of Technology.

Apart from the system of pumps, shock absorbers, engine block and head, the car built by students from Rzeszów does not have standard parts available on the market. Students have designed from scratch the engine equipment, exhaust system, fuel system, electronics and intake system that has been printed on a 3D printer with modern materials.

Members of the science club at Rzeszów University of Technology are more than 20 designers, marketers, people responsible for the engine, shell and electrics of the car.

"It started with a few enthusiasts talking about the automotive industry. After some time, we came up with the idea of forming a science club, with the purpose of building this car and acquiring experience and knowledge in this field. Today, we all agree that it was a good move, which gives us a really strong in a resume" - said Zborowski.

The Formula Student competition, which this year will take place on 6 July in England, will be attended by the best technical universities in the world. The team from Rzeszów will compete for the first time. The purpose of the competition organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is to select the best engineers and managers.

Several teams in Poland participate in this competition, including teams from AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Warsaw University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology and Wrocław University of Technology. Worldwide, there are more than 600 university teams building similar cars.
