Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences obtained this year\'s European ERA Chairs grant worth 2.5 million euros. Soon, the grant will allow the Institute to hire a world-class specialist in the field of biology, working on its border with chemistry and physics.

The ERA Chairs programme (organized in this edition under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme) supports universities and research institutions in European regions with a lower intensity of research and development work. The grants give unit an opportunity to develop their potential. One of the assumptions is that the awarded centres should invite eminent scientists to participate in their research. This is one of the methods to increase the competitiveness of grant recipients in comparison to other centres in the ERA (European Research Area). In February it was announced that the grants were awarded to 13 units, including two Polish centres: Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation - National Research Institute in Puławy.

In a release sent to PAP, the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS announces its plans for this grant. In mid-2016, the Institute wants to hire an eminent scholar specialising in widely understood biology and its contact with chemistry and physics. The scientist will be selected in a competition evaluated by a committee composed of scientists from Poland, Great Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands, including winners of the most prestigious grants awarded by the European Research Council (ERC).

"Physical chemistry is still looking for new inspiration. We are confident that biology can be a good source of inspiration. Therefore, we would like a world-class specialist to build in our institute an interdisciplinary facility capable of researching the most challenging scientific problems lying at the crossroads of modern chemistry, physics and biology" - said the Institute director Prof. Robert Hołyst.

According to the release, scientists from Colombia, Sweden, Spain, Portugal and Ukraine are already leaders of some of the research team. The centre is high in the rankings Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the European Commission granted the institute the right to use the HR Excellence in Research badge.

"It should be added that for a really good scientist who wants to pursue ambitious research topics, Poland is now an attractive destination due to the growing number of grant competitions in which the three-year grant value often exceeds one million euros" - emphasised Prof. Hołyst and added that the growing position of the Institute also allows it to more effectively compete for the best European grants.

Pilot edition of the ERA Chairs programme was launched at the end of 2013, under the 7th Framework Programme. The grants were awarded to 11 units, including the Institute of Plant Genetics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań.
