Polish research centre NCBR helps fight lifestyle diseases

The National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) has earmarked PLN 310 million for 16 projects in the area of oncology, cardiology, neurology and regenerative medicine in the first edition of its Strategmed programme.

The Strategmed Prevention and Treatment of Lifestyle Diseases is the first strategic research and development programme prepared by the NCBR board based on the National Research Programme.

"Lifestyle diseases are now one of the most important challenges for medicine. In order to develop the global potential of Polish scientists, we need to invest in the latest technologies in this area. The Strategmed programme came in response to the fast-developing innovations in prevention, diagnostics and treatment of an ageing society," Science and Higher Education Minister Lena Kolarska-Bobinska was quoted as saying in an NCBR statement sent to PAP on Thursday.

The Strategmed programme will close at the end of 2017. By that time, the NCBR plans to announce three competitions for a total sum of PLN 800 million.
