In 2018, 44 percent young adults in Poland have completed higher education; this percentage is close to the OECD average, according to the report "Education at a glance 2019" presented this week at the Ministry of Science. In 2008, this percentage in Poland was 32 percent.
The annual report presented at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education provides data on the structure, finances and results of education systems in the member and partner states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This year's theme of the publication is higher education.
"This is a very valuable source of information for us - policy makers - in developing evidence-based policy" - Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Sebastian Skuza told reporters. He added that this report was created in cooperation with three Polish institutions: the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of National Education and Statistics Poland.
According to Andrzej Kurkiewicz, Deputy Director of Innovation and Development at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the content of the report confirms a large increase in the number of people with higher education in Poland. "It also shows that many more women than men undertake the effort of higher education" - he added.
The report shows that currently more young adults (25-34 years) in Poland receive higher education than a decade ago. While 32% young adults received such education in 2008, 10 years later it was 44%, close to the OECD average.
"The increasing number of foreign students is also a very good result. This system is being internationalised" - emphasized Kurkiewicz. According to the report, the share of foreign students in Poland in 2017 was 4 percent - a 3 percent increase compared to 2010. 2 percent Polish students study abroad.
Asked about the conclusion in the report that could be alarming, Kurkiewicz pointed to a low percentage share of older people with higher education who want to improve their education.
"We respond to these challenges by creating university of the second, third age, supporting courses and education, but it is a long-term process" - he noted.
According to the report, only 26 percent adults participated in lifelong education and training for adults in Poland in 2016, while the OECD average is 47 percent.
the expert from the Ministry of Science mentions a positive element of the report for Poland: the high proportion of people with higher education in the production industry. "In this respect, we are at the forefront in the OECD" - added Kurkiewicz.
The report "Education at a glance" is prepared by experts from the Indicators of Education Systems (INES) working group. Most of the Polish higher education data come from the integrated information system on science and higher education POL-on.
