Michał Kleiber elected Vice-President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts

Prof. Michał Kleiber, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, has been elected Vice-President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA). It was decided last Friday at the annual meeting of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.

The Polish Academy of Sciences spokesman Mieczysław Grabianowski informed about in the release sent to PAP.

EASA (also known under its Latin name: Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea) is one of the most prestigious scientific organizations in Europe and aims to support pan-European scientific and artistic creativity. Among the several hundred members of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts - in addition to scholars and artists from Europe - are many prominent figures from other regions of the world. Academy members include 29 Nobel Prize winners.

During Friday\'s meeting, one of the founders of EASA - Felix Unger was re-elected President of AESA.

Prof. Michał Kleiber - the newly elected Vice-President of EASA - is a specialist in the use of computer technology in research. In 2001-2005, he was Minister of Science and Computerization (in the governments of Leszek Miller and Marek Belka) and served as chairman of the Scientific Research Committee. In 2006 he became President of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The EASA origins date back to 1985. Its founders were heart surgeon Felix Unger, former Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Franz Koenig, and political theorist and philosopher Nikolaus Lobkowicz. The seat of the academy is Salzburg.

Polish EASA members include Stefan Angielski, Jerzy Buzek, Władysław Bartoszewski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Stanisław Sołtysiński, Andrzej Zoll, Archbishop Alfons Nossol, Maciej Nowicki, Ryszard Tadeusiewicz.

The honorary patrons of the organization include the kings of Spain and Belgium, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and prominent politicians such as Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Alfred Gusenbauer, Jean-Claude Juncker, Helmut Kohl, Romano Prodi and Guy Verhofstadt.
