Six Polish women researchers received L’Oréal-UNESCO fellowships for Women in Science on Wednesday. The laureates represent a wide range of disciplines, from chemistry, through math and biotechnology to psychology" - said the jury chairwoman, Prof. Ewa Łojkowska.
Three gold and two silver medals and special prizes were awarded to Polish scientists during the 20th Moscow International Salon of Inventions and Innovative Technologies "Archimedes 2017". Nearly 800 inventions from 18 countries were presented at the event.
The mysterious history of the rauks - spectacular shape forms of the rocky coast of the Baltic Sea - is being investigated by Dr. Mateusz Czesław Strzelecki from the University of Wroclaw. Sea stacks, also called rauks from their name in Swedish, are groups of columns of rock towering over limestone platforms extending along the coast of Gotland and Farö.
Searching for exoplanets, or planets outside the solar system, requires huge amounts of data to be filtered. Astronomers perform such analyses with computational clouds. The latest clouds will be investigated in view of scientific applications by an international team coordinated by the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.
In the human brain, synapses are responsible, among other things, for the ability to remember and learn. Researchers at the University of Lodz are working on artificial synapses, which will be an indispensable part of a neuromorphic computer, mimicking the operation of the human brain.
Poles submit many applications for the prestigious ERC grants, but very few win them. "The average ERC success rate is 11 percent, and in Poland it is 2.5 percent" - told PAP Ewa Kuśmierczyk from the Excellence in Science Department of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which helps Poles in obtaining these grants.
