University of Lodz presented SmartUni, the heart of which is a complex mobile app that presents the offer of studies, promotes student life and facilitates navigation in the university facilities. This interactive guide, available for current and future students in 4 languages, uses microlocation based on beacons placed on the campus.

The application has been created primarily for foreign students, to help them navigate the college and find their way around Łódź. The app is available in 4 languages: Polish, English, Russian and Chinese on Android and iOS devices.

"Over the last three years we have been seeing a lot more interest of students from all over the world in our university. In the academic year 2011/12, 544 foreign students were studying at the University of Lodz, and a year later already 1420 representatives of 80 nationalities. We are happy about their presence here and we want them to feel at home at the university and in Łódź. SmartUni app has been created for them, to address their needs during their stay in Łódź" - explained Liliana Lato, Head of the university’s International Relations Office.

In the app students will find information on recruitment, news from the University of Lodz, as well as dates of sessions and semesters and days off. Student zone contains information on deans\' offices, libraries, dormitories, visas, insurance. Microlocatio (beacon) system helps to reach destinations on campus. SmartUni also has a section with tips on daily life in Łódź.

"We try to adjust our promotional materials and methods of sharing this knowledge to the needs of our recipients, who are young people. For years we have been actively working on social networks in Polish, English, Russian and Chinese. Creating this modern application is another nod to the demanding student. We plan to further develop the application and set up more beacons in the university buildings" - explained Head of the International Relations Office in an interview with PAP.

It is worth noting that current students of the University of Lodz participated in the process of development of SmartUni.

"In the beginning we invited students to participate in a survey about the application. Responses helped us identify those areas that were important from the student’s point of view. Immediately after we built the first version of the application, we invited selected foreign students to test it"- added Lato.

The mobile application is co-financed by the European Union under the European Social Fund. The SmartUni project has been recognized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, winning third place in a funding competition.
