The Polish Sejm (lower house) on Thursday authorised the president to ratify an agreement with the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The deal facilitates access to state-of-the-art space exploration equipment for Polish researchers.

Membership in the organisation guarantees access to grants and research internships, all ESO\'s research equipment, technical solutions and patents, said MP Tadeusz Iwinski during the Sejm debate.

Iwinski reminded that only firms from ESO member states could take part in tenders related to the organisation\'s investments, such as the EUR 1 billion E-ELT telescope being built in Chile.

Founded in 1962, the European Southern Observatory (officially the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere) is an intergovernmental research organisation affiliating 15 countries. ESO has three observatories in Chile.
