Pairs of collaborating scientists from Poland and the U.S. can be nominated for the second edition of the Polish-American Scientific Award. Nominations are accepted until 31 December 2015. Each of the winners will receive 5 thousand dollars.

The competition is organized by the Foundation for Polish Science (Fundacja na rzecz Nauki Polskiej, FNP) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The purpose of the award is to strengthen and emphasise the value of cooperation between Polish and American scientists. "The award will be granted to two researchers, one from Poland and one from the United States, for joint outstanding scientific achievements" - announced the Foundation for Polish Science.

The award is granted every two years, and its amount is the equivalent of 5 thousand dollars for each of the winners.

The award may be granted in any field of research except the arts. Winners are selected in a competition based on nominations. Nominees can be submitted, among others, by all active members of the Polish and American scientific communities holding at least a doctoral degree. Self-nominations are also considered. The winners are selected by a jury composed of eminent representatives of the Polish and American scientific communities, taking into account the opinions of experts evaluating the proposals.

The first competition, which received 55 nominations, was resolved in February 2015. The winners were: Prof. Mariusz Jaskolski of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Dr. Alexander Wlodawer of the National Cancer Institute in the US. World-renowned researchers, working together for nearly 30 years, received the award for structural studies of proteins of medical rtelevance, which contributed to the development of new therapies for human diseases, such as AIDS or leukaemia in children. The award ceremony was held in April at the AAAS headquarters in Washington.

"The first Polish-American Scientific Award competition attracted great interest of both Polish and American scientific communities. We are pleased that the community responded positively to our proposal, submitting 55 nominations at a very high level, which resulted in the selection of esteemed winners. We hope that the prize will become a permanent part of the catalogue of prestigious research awards" - said Prof. Maciej Żylicz, president of the Foundation for Polish Science.

The results of the second competition will be announced in 2016. In accordance with the principle of rotating, awards ceremony will be held in Poland.

Foundation for Polish Science was established in 1991. Is an independent, self-financing non-governmental, non-profit organization with a mission to support science. It is the largest non-budgetary source of funding for science in Poland.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) was established in 1848. It is the largest scientific society in the world, bringing together more than 250 scientific societies and academies. It is the publisher of, among others, the journal \'Science\', and the prestigious website EurekAlert!, with the latest news from the world of science.
