Lynx return after decades of absence to the Silesian Beskids. A proof of this is a recording from video trap that recorded the animal approaching a doe killed by wolves - told PAP Vice-President of the Association for Nature WOLF, Robert Mysłajek.

Naturalists from the association, which for several years has been studying the lynx population in the Carpathian part of Silesia, until recently were only finding tracks of the predator in the area of the Żywiec Landscape Park. "There were no traces in places where lynx had left them before, in Little and Silesian Beskids. After being covered with protection, the population of these animals began to regenerate and now they are returning to the old stands"- said Mysłajek.

In his opinion, at least animals 18 live in the mountains in the south of the province of Silesia. "Estimation can be deceptive, because they also have territories on the Slovak side. But we are certainly dealing with increased range of distribution. Already two years ago, in the Silesian Beskids we found tracks of mating lynxes. We suspect that there has been breeding, so the predators are already here permanently" - he emphasised.

The naturalist not hide his joy that the animal was recorded. "In the case of lynx it is difficult to predict where they will appear. They are quite secretive. We are looking for places that can lure them. In this case, we used old prey hunted by wolves in the forest district Węgierska Górka. We suspected that some from the animals might approached it; a marten or birds. This week, however, a lynx appeared. It was a big surprise" - he added.

According to the naturalist, spotting lynx in its natural environment is almost impossible, especially in the mountains, where the spruce forests are dense and terrain conditions are difficult.

Lynx are predatory mammals of the family Felidae. Their population in Poland is estimated at approx. 300 animals. Adult lynx can measure from 100 to 150 cm, standing up to 75 cm at the shoulder.

The Association for Nature WOLF was founded in 1996, with its seat in Twardorzeczka, at the foot of Skrzyczne. The organisation is dedicated to protection of nature, particularly carnivores - wolves, lynxes, bears, otters, badgers and other species. Its members carry out educational and research activities.
