The University of Warsaw ranked sixth in the new Times Higher Education: New Europe ranking. The ranking presents universities from 13 European Union countries that were the last to join the Community. The Estonian University of Tartu topped the list.

Times Higher Education (THE) published a ranking of 53 universities from countries that joined the EU after 2004. The ranking includes higher education institutions from Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia. 12 Polish universities have been included.

The University of Tartu (Estonia) took the first place in the ranking. In second and third place were universities in Cyprus - the Cyprus University of Technology and the University of Cyprus. The Charles University in Prague was fourth, followed by a medical school - Semmelweis University in Budapest.

Among 12 Polish institutions, the University of Warsaw ranked highest (in the sixth place). "The ranking confirms the strong position of the University of Warsaw and the Charles University in Prague. The declaration of creation of the European University Alliance signed by four European research universities - University of Warsaw, Sorbonne University, University of Heidelberg and Charles University in Prague - was a very good decision" - says Dr. Maciej Duszczyk, vice-rector of the University of Warsaw for scientific issues, quoted in a release published on the University of Warsaw website.

The Jagiellonian University took 13th place and Warsaw University of Technology was 16th. The 20th place went to AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, 26th to the University of Wrocław. Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Gdańsk University of Technology, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń were in the fourth ten. The following universities were also included: University of Silesia in Katowice, University of Gdańsk, University of Lodz, Lodz University of Technology.

The Times Higher Education ranking is one of the most important global educational rankings - next to the QS Ranking, the Shanghai Ranking and U-Multirank. Authors of the new sub-ranking used the same methodology as the global ranking. Indicators grouped in five areas were taken into account - teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

Detailed ranking results are available on the website.
