Musicologist elected to Academia Europaea

Professor Paweł Gancarczyk from the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been elected to membership of the prestigious scientific organization Academia Europaea, which will help promote Polish musicological research internationally.

Academia Europaea, founded in 1988 on the initiative of the Royal Society, brings together outstanding experts from all fields of science, including Nobel Prize laureates, and provides opinions and advice on scientific matters through cooperation with the European Commission and others. 

Professor Gancarczyk said: “I consider my appointment an expression of trust shown by musicology and art history researchers. They voted for my membership in Academia Europaea, which proves that my international activity is noticed.”

He added: “Joining this community is an opportunity to further develop international contacts, for example by jointly organizing conferences. This, in turn, will further promote Polish musicology in the world.”

The distinguished researcher is Head of Department of Musicology at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also editor-in-chief of the quarterly Muzyka and the series Ikonografia Muzyczna. Studia i Materiały. He is the vice-chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the vice-chairman of the Art Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The Polish members of Academia Europaea also include professors: Janusz Bujnicki, Agnieszka Chacińska, Tomasz Dietl, Jerzy Duszyński, Michał Kleiber, Marta Miączyńska, Marcin Nowotny and Maciej Żylicz.

The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences is an interdisciplinary research institution, in which research and documentation is conducted in the field of art history, musicology, theatre studies, film studies and cultural anthropology.

The Institute has the largest collection of archives in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. It digitises historical sound materials and photographs.
