Polish start-up's new lithium-ion cells that are ‘better, safer and quicker’ than conventional batteries

A Polish start-up has created lithium-ion cells which have more than twice as much energy as a typical lithium-ion cell and can be recharged in less than 10 minutes.

According to the start-up The Batteries based in the Aeropolis Podkarpackie Science & Technology Park Centre, the ‘solid-state, thin film, lithium-ion cells can outclass current batteries in every way’. 

In addition to doubling energy storage capacity and quickly recharging, whereas conventional batteries have problems with working at high and low temperatures, The Batteries’ cells are designed to work in temperatures between -140 to +170 degrees C.

They are also extremely durable and according to the company, instead of the typical 600 charging cycles, the new batteries can withstand up to 10,000 cycles.

They are also expected to be safer by using the electrolyte in the form of a solid to eliminate the risk of possible ignition. In conventional batteries the risk is neutralized with special additives.

The company adds that the new batteries can be easily formed into various shapes, which will expand their possible use. In addition to the possibility of adapting them to unusual forms, they will also enable the creation of flexible gadgets.

When it comes to the design, the main difference between new and conventional batteries is that the invention is in the form of thin layers, in which much fewer structural defects form that deteriorate the parameters.

At the same time, solid-state electrolyte is much less reactive liquid electrolyte, which gives it a much higher durability. (PAP)
