Polish scientific institution with a prestigious European Commission logo

The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw received the prestigious HR Excellence in Research logo from the European Commission. It is the third Polish institution that meets European standards for hiring scientists.

The European Commission has awarded the HR Excellence in Research logo, which identifies particularly attractive work environments, to 155 research institutions in 23 European countries. In Poland, until now two institutions were allowed to use it: the Foundation for Polish Science and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS.

"This prestigious logo is awarded by the European Commission to scientific institutions which comply with the provisions of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, which supports the creation of a good working environment for researchers" - reads in the release sent to PAP by the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw.

The European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct have been adopted by the European Commission in 2005. These documents specify the role, rights and duties of researchers, their employees and funding agencies.

"International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology is a relatively new research unit, but from the beginning, we have focused on the latest principles of recruitment and human resource management, drawing on an example of the best research centres and only implementing proven solutions" - said the deputy director for research at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Prof. Michał Witt.

He emphasized that the distinction was an impulse to increase the attractiveness of the Institute, by improving working and career development conditions for current and future employees.

"The society should more fully appreciate the responsibilities and the professionalism that researchers demonstrate in their work at different stages of their careers and in their many roles as experts, leaders, project coordinators, managers, supervisors, mentors, counselors and science popularisers" - said EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik.

Every two years, the institutions which use the HR Excellence in Research logo are evaluated by the European Commission. If irregularities are found, the right to use the logo may be revoked.

International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IIMCB) is part of Biocentrum Ochota, the research consortium which is one of the largest research centres in the field of biomedicine in Poland. The main objectives of the Institute include conducting basic research in the field of molecular medicine, implementing scientific achievements in practice, and popularisation of modern medicine and molecular biology. This year, in the parametric evaluation of scientific units the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology received the highest scientific category A+ which means that it was among the 37 "calling cards" of Polish science.
