Seventeen Polish doctors and scientists granted fellowships at top Us medical centres

Seventeen Polish doctors and scientists have won fellowships to the best medical centres in the US after winning the second edition of the Walczak Programme of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).

The group, who will spend three to six months at centres including Harvard Medical School, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute, will take part in scientific projects and have the opportunity to watch the daily work of local specialists as they diagnose patients and carry out therapeutic procedures.

The second edition of the programme was open to medical doctors and scientists specialising in cardiology, cancer treatment, allergology and infectious diseases, as well as in fields added in this edition: cardiac surgery, diabetology and psychiatry.

Among the 17 winners who come from medical schools and other scientific institutions in Białystok, Gdańsk, Kraków, Lublin, Łódź, Rzeszów, Wrocław, Warsaw and Zielona Góra, the majority specialise in cancer treatment (12), two each in cardiology and psychiatry, and one in diabetology. They

The total funding allocated for the fellowships is PLN 1,190,000.

The same number of fellowships were also granted in the first edition of the programme. One of the first programme winners, Dr. Mateusz Hołda from the Jagiellonian University Medical College, said: “A visit to the University of California, Los Angeles, gave me the opportunity to carry out a specific research project and gain unique clinical experience. In addition, I was able to establish long-term cooperation with the world’s leading centre for cardiology imaging.”

The Walczak Programme is carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
