A pioneering research project to support governments, policy makers, healthcare workers and experts in making decisions and taking measures during the coronavirus pandemic is being launched by an International team of scientists and coordinated by the University of Silesia in Katowice.

The project called 'Analysis of individual psychological factors promoting adaptation in the COVID-19 pandemic situation’ will see psychologists from Poland, Spain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands analyse the ability of people to cope with the global crisis, taking into account the specificities of different countries and the measures taken by governments.

Scientists want to identify factors mitigating the negative effects of stress associated with the spread of coronavirus and adaptive behaviour of people.

Coordinator of the project Professor Barbara Kożusznik from the University of Silesia said: “We know the negative consequences of Covid-19 stress quite well. Anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder are the possible effects of social isolation, job loss, risk of infection, forced work, remote learning, constant concern for loved ones.

“Psychologists have conducted a number of studies on the behaviour of people in extreme situations. Those were people affected by the effects of the tsunami, earthquake, genocide or terrorist attack, but also those who experience stress at work every day, for example fire-fighters.

She added: “We have a powerful reservoir of knowledge and tools, but for the first time we are at the centre of a reality that has not been thoroughly explored. We do not know how long this threat will last, what its course will be, what steps will be taken in individual countries. We do not have full knowledge about the effects of this crisis. That is why we are joining forces with other scientists to look for good solutions and monitor the situation.”

The research will be carried out by scientists from the University of Silesia in Katowice, the University of Montpellier (France), the Valencian International University, the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), Ghent University (Belgium) and the Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands).
