Warsaw University of Technology students have taken first place at the e-Health Hackathon programming marathon for developing a drug management system that checks if there are any adverse interactions between drugs taken by a patient.

The app will also allow doctors to monitor whether patients are taking their prescribed medication.

Jakub Sobolewski from the university’s Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology said: “This solution also allows you to obtain information from patients about the effectiveness of therapy, any side effects, and whether the drug works as intended.

“Ultimately, such data could be analysed by the Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund in terms of the quality of treatment and allocation of funds, and also by pharmaceutical companies to help then obtain knowledge about whether a therapy is effective.”

The tool can help not only doctors, but also pharmacists. Before dispensing a drug to a patient, they could check whether or not it interferes with the patient’s other medication.

Sobolewski said: ’We hope that we will be able to develop the project, seeing as we had the opportunity to meet representatives of business and public administration during the event.”

The e-Health Hackathon event was attended by 15 teams, consisting of IT and medical students as well as representatives of start-ups. Over the course of two days, they had to tackle a challenge related to cardiology.

Their task was to develop a solution that would help patients, doctors and the entire health care system. The jury evaluated categories including: innovation, content-related value, commercialisation potential, competitiveness, quality, and the usefulness of the projects.

The e-Health Hackathon was launched on the initiative of the Warsaw Health Innovation Hub, the companies Janssen Polska and Roche Polska, and the Federation of Polish Entrepreneurs.

Included in the team from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology were Mateusz Szczęsny, Oliwia Makowiecka and Igor Anczykowski.
