Physicians from the University Clinic Hospital in Opole have developed a new, minimally invasive method of closing the artery for transaxillary access.

Team leader Dr. Jerzy Sacha said: “Our method is used for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and introduction of an Impella CP supporting the heart.

“It can also be used in vascular procedures on the aorta.”

The Opole centre is well known internationally for the procedures using percutaneous transaxillary access to the axillary artery.

The facility in Opole is the only hospital in Poland where these procedures are carried out, also in patients transferred from other hospitals.

A description and video demonstration of the method were published in the American journal JACC Cardiovascular Interventions.
