University of Rzeszów to cooperate with two Chinese universities

Learning the Chinese language, learning about the Chinese culture, history, and principles of Chinese business, as well as the exchange of scientists, joint research in the area of technical sciences are some of the objectives of cooperation between the University of Rzeszów and two universities in China.

As part of cooperation with Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University (GPNU), in the next academic year (from October 2017 year) the University of Rzeszów will launch new specialisation: Chinese Culture and Social Development. The four-year course will be taught at both universities; the first two years at UR, another two at GPNU (China) - told PAP spokesman for the University of Rzeszów Maciej Ulita.

Students will learn the Chinese language, learn about the history and culture of the country, as well as Chinese rituals. They will also have classes on Chinese society, business, education.

"Studies in this specialization are addressed to Polish high school graduates and students, who in future would like to apply for a job in business or education - in China or outside China, but with required knowledge of the Chinese language, law and culture" - said Ulita.

The course will be taught by lecturers from both the Chinese GPNU and the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Rzeszów. The languages of the course will be English and Chinese.

After four years of study of Chinese Culture and Social Development, graduates will be able to use the modern Chinese language at the basic level; have basic knowledge and skills related to the Chinese society and social trends.

Graduates will also learn intercultural thinking, the different cultural aspects, such as mentality, religion, behaviour, and even gestures and body language, which tend to be problematic during communication.

Ulita gave the example of exchanging business cards. "In our culture it is not important, but in China a business card should be taken with both hands. This principle should be followed strictly, otherwise - even if the other person does not show it - we offend the other person and the planned business will not happen" - said the UR spokesman.

Another problem may be understanding the negative response of Chinese business partner. "In our culture, we learn assertiveness, saying +no+. However, in the Chinese culture one does not say +no+. Students will learn to interpret the expressions of their potential partners to understand when they refuse, although the word +no+ has not been spoken" - explained Ulita.

After the completion of the four-year course, all graduates will have an opportunity to take a year course to prepare for the HSK test, required by the Chinese higher education law. This test confirms education by Chinese standards. It will allow graduates to apply for jobs in their profession.

On the other hand, the University of Rzeszów cooperation with Dongguan University of Technology assumes primarily joint research projects, conducting research in the area of technical sciences, as well as joint conferences and mutual exchange of faculty, researchers and students.

The spokesman added that in this respect there is no specified date of commencement of cooperation. "Both partners are willing to cooperate. When we have a research project, both parties will engage in its implementation as needed" - he noted.

Both universities will also exchange textbooks and experience in the planning, organization and implementation of the teaching process. The language of jointly implemented projects will be English.

"Attracting partners for scientific cooperation from regions such as China is extremely valuable for the University of Rzeszów. Real science requires broadening horizons and gaining different experiences. The dynamics of development of China and - if only because of the cultural aspect - difference from what is characteristic for our culture, is invaluable" - said Prof. Marek Koziorowski, Vice-Rector for Science and International Relations at the University of Rzeszów.
