Pioneering liver tumour removal surgery by electroporation has been carried out in a patient with adversely located tumour by doctors from the Central Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.

"Electroporation method consists in treating tumour with high voltage shocks at very short time intervals. We could joke that the current operates for us" - Prof. Paweł Lampe, lead surgeon and head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department said during Friday\'s press conference at the hospital.

The method is indicated in patients in whom classic surgery is not possible. In this case, the tumour location posed danger of damaging key vessels during surgery.

"This method damages the tumour, and does not damage the vessels. It is possible to save them because the current destroys the cells but foes not destroy collagen. Surgical is and will remain irreplaceable, but we can not shy away from modern methods, especially when we are not able to help with the standard method" - said Prof. Lampe.

The operated patient was also a scientist, lawyer, Prof. Antoni Witosz. "I have the satisfaction of being the patient who underwent the first such surgery, a kind of guinea pig" - he joked in an interview with reporters. "I had no doubts about undergoing this procedure - it was a matter of complete trust in doctors. I feel great, I could go for a walk in the woods right now" - he said. (PAP)
