Cooperation in conducting research and educating students are among the subjects of the agreement on the establishment of the East European Universities Network, signed last Sunday in Lublin. Catholic University of Lublin is the leader of the consortium formed by 12 universities in five countries.

Rector of the Catholic University of Lublin Fr. Prof. Antoni Dębiński stressed that the establishment of the consortium is the result of previous international contacts of the Lublin university that would now intensify. "We want to jointly acquire research grants, we are thinking of double diplomas. I am confident that we will be able to coordinate these activities so that they are fruitful" - said the rector of the Catholic University of Lublin.

"The list of members of the consortium will expand, we have information that other universities will want to join us. We intend to establish the Network office, meetings will be periodic, but at various locations" - said Fr. Prof. Dębiński.

Marshal of the Lublin province Sławomir Sosnowski said that the agreement between the universities should also affect the cooperation between scientists and business. He also expressed his belief that "this will be a good start for better inter-regional cooperation".

Rector of the Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani Tbilisi State Pedagogical University in Georgia, Prof. Vaja Vardidze, said that the creation of the Network is a valuable initiative. "We look forward to joint research projects, especially in the field of law and theology, as well as mutual exchange of professors and students, which will bring our peoples even closer" - he said.

Rector of the National University of Ostroh Academy in Ostroh, Ukraine, Prof Ihor Pasichnyk stressed that the Ukrainian universities lean towards to Europe. "Our university is already working with Polish universities. Many people in Ukraine are leaving to study in Poland, but then come back and work for the good of our country. At our university we have 10 employees who have successfully defended their doctorates at Polish universities, including the Catholic University of Lublin" - he said.

East European Universities Network is formed by 12 universities, including eight in Ukraine, and one each in Belarus, Moldova, Georgia and Poland.

The objective is partnership in research and teaching students. Universities want to jointly conduct research projects, apply for international grants, use the infrastructure of individual units and produce publications. They also intend to work in support of national, religious and ethnic minorities and organize joint cultural, artistic and sports events. (PAP)
