Ranking of Universities: Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw still at the top

Jagiellonian University once again proved to be the best university in Poland. Right behind is the University of Warsaw, according to the recently published Ranking of Universities 2013 of Perspektywy i Rzeczpospolita.

"We\'re trying to imagine the perfect university in Polish conditions and measure the distance to this perfection" - said on at a press conference president of the ranking chapter, Prof. Michał Kleiber, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences. "With this ranking, we want to provide possibly reliable information about the level and conditions of studying in Poland" - he said and added this provides the objectified knowledge of the condition of the sector.

In the top ten academic institutions, the Jagiellonian University (scoring 100 percent) and the University of Warsaw (99.92 percent) were followed by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (80 percent), Warsaw University of Technology (79 percent), AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Wrocław University of Technology, University of Wrocław, University of Medical Sciences in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and Warsaw School of Economics. This section of the ranking compared 83 institutions authorized to confer doctoral degrees.

"This is good material for analysis" - said the rector of the Jagiellonian University, Prof. Wojciech Nowak. He admitted that although the Jagiellonian University took first place, it was not best in all the criteria taken into consideration by the jury. "The ranking shows what still needs to be improved" - he added. He noted that the Jagiellonian University took first place almost on the eve of the 650th anniversary of the university.

Kozminski University in Warsaw defended the first place among private universities that confer MA degrees. Best rated among State Higher Vocational Schools was the State Higher Vocational School in Kalisz, and among private undergraduate colleges first place was awarded to Jan Zamoyski College of Humanities and Economics in Zamość.

The best university was the Jagiellonian University, technical university - Warsaw University of Technology, economic university - Warsaw School of Economics, agricultural university – SGGW-WULS in Warsaw, medical university - Jagiellonian University Medical College, teaching college- Pedagogical University of Cracow, and physical education college - University School of Physical Education in Wrocław.

Authors of the ranking awarded the Staff Forge 2013 award to the university, which recorded the most progress in the education of scientific personnel. The award went to the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków. The Promotion 2013 awards for the most effective jump to the group of the best universities of went to Medical University of Gdańsk (advancement from 18th to 12th place), and the Philological School of Higher Education in Wrocław (jump from 59th to 17th place in the group of private MA universities).

The evaluation criteria included: prestige of the university (including employers\' preferences, choices of Olympiad winners and international recognition), studying conditions (availability of highly qualified staff, library resources, sports achievements), internationalisation (student exchange, foreign students ), innovation (patents, EU funding), and the scientific capabilities (e.g., development of research staff). In the case of academic institutions, instead of scientific capabilities the jury evaluated scientific potential (including doctoral and habilitation rights) and scientific effectiveness (e.g., scientific publications, staff development). The rankings also compared 40 different fields of study and selected universities that offered the best courses.

"The ranking is a model for many organizations that prepare rankings" - said Kleiber. He said that a proof of recognition would be the international congress of institutions organizing university rankings, to be held next week at the invitation of the ranking authors.

The ranking was prepared by "Perspektywy" Educational Foundation under the supervision of the chapter chaired by the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Michał Kleiber. The ranking authors evaluate a total of more than 220 public and private universities.
