A female lynx with two grown young was recorded by a video trap placed in the Żywiec Landscape Park by naturalists from the Association for Nature WOLF. According to the vice-president of the association Robert Mysłajek, the population of these predators in the Beskids is not declining.

The naturalist estimates that about 25 animals of this species live in the Silesian part of the Carpathians. Their number was determined based on tracks, video trap recordings, as well as genetic methods used in projects carried out jointly with the Czechs and Slovaks.

"The trend is very positive. They continue to expand their territory, which means that the population is not decreasing" - Mysłajek says.

Robert Mysłajek reminds that in the winter cameras recorded two lynxes in the Wapienica valley near Bielsko-Biała. This proves that these predators have reached the northern edge of the Silesian Beskids. At least four adult animals live there, including two reproducing females.

The recording from the video trap placed in the Żywiec Landscape Park is available online.

The lynx is a predatory mammal from the felidae family. Its population in Poland is estimated at approx. 300 animals. An adult lynx can measure from 100 to 150 cm in length, and standing 75 cm at the shoulder. Lynxes, except females with young, lead a lonely life. They use large areas, reaching 100-140 square kilometres in the mountains. They are under strict protection in Poland.

The Association for Nature WOLF was established in 1996. Its headquarters is in Twardorzeczka at the foot of Skrzyczne. Its mission is the protection of nature, and especially the activities that benefit predatory mammals - wolves, lynxes, bears, otters, badgers and other species. Its members conduct educational and research activities.
