Polish scientists are to team up with virus-busting agencies to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

The PLN 5 million project from the Medical Research Agency (MRA) will involvePolish research centres in global research into an effective coronavirus vaccine.

Radosław Sierpiński, President of the MRA, said: “In view of the epidemiological threat, the Medical Research Agency must respond quickly by creating a dedicated program that will initiate the participation of Polish scientists in international projects in the field of CoV-2 vaccine research.”

The Agency has already started talks with American partners, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Washington, DC, as well as with the agencies of the European Commission and Medical Universities in Europe, and the Chinese embassy.

Sierpiński said: “I believe that the project carried out by the Medical Research Agency will allow the world's best centres to join forces, use the potential of Polish scientific staff in the leading work on developing a vaccine against COVID-19, and our talks will bring results quickly.”

According to a WHO report, as of March 8, 2020, SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections were confirmed in over 100 countries, and the total number of patients exceeded 105,000, of which over 3,500 died.
