Poles are most afraid of three environmental problems: air pollution, water pollution and garbage problem, according to results of public opinion survey commissioned and published by the Ministry of Environment.

54 percent respondents declared their fear of air pollution, and 53 percent the problem of garbage and water pollution.

Summarizing the results of the survey, Minister of the Environment Mactin Korolec noter that they were important not only for environmental policy planning, but also for every Polish citizen.

"Even today, these three areas (air and water pollution and garbage problem - PAP) are a priority for me, and we continue our efforts to effectively deal with them" - said Korolec quoted in the release. "I believe it is very important that Polish people are aware of the garbage problem and they know that fighting it will require the involvement of each of us. (...) The success of the withdrawal of plastic bags from shops is a proof that it is possible" - the minister said.

The ministry spokeswoman Magdalena Sikorska told PAP that similar surveys will be repeated annually to monitor the ecological awareness and activities of the Poles. "This is a long-term policy (...) people must be on the same page with the ecology" - she emphasized.

The ministry reported that the purpose of the survey was to find out what we do with waste, what we think about climate change. The survey also concerned our environmental behaviour and approach to ecology.

The ministry emphasized that for 94 percent respondents "trash is such a nuisance that we agree to even more strict regulations and tougher penalties for littering". According to 84 percent, sorting of garbage should be mandatory.

The survey shows that 45 percent of us regularly separate waste, and 17 percent does it occasionally. According to the survey, the wide availability of containers for waste segregation would contribute to more activity of citizens in this area (74 percent). Respondents (72 percent) have also pointed to a lack of information on proper waste segregation.

70 percent respondents feel responsible for the local environment, primarily out of concern for future generations (67 percent) and health (64 percent). Only 1 percent respondents believe that taking any action in this regard is pointless.

The study also indicates out that we pay more attention to energy saving. City residents have more awareness: 73 percent respondents turn off the light in unused rooms, 56 percent use energy-efficient light sources, 45 percent buy energy efficient appliances/electronics, and 37 percent seal windows.

Only 2 percent. respondents have systems for generating energy from renewable sources.

According to 80 percent respondents we currently experience climate change. 13 percent respondents were of opposite opinion. The main reasons for climate change are environmental pollution (57 percent), greenhouse gas emissions (56 percent), advances in technology (44 percent) and forest loss (37 percent).

More than 90 percent respondents believe that the most important activity of man for the environment should be the protection of nature. According to about 80 percent respondents, national parks should be expanded. 12 percent were of opposite opinion.

The study was conducted using computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) in 2011 on a representative sample of 1004 Poles over 15 years of age.
