A butterfly garden, or a square with flowers and bushes that attract these colourful insects, has been created in Zabłocie in Kraków. The project was completed thanks to the involvement of Jagiellonian University students.

The "pocket park" opens on September 2. The square is at the junction of Dekerta, Wałowa and Kiełkowskiego Streets - the authors of the project "On the corner of Dekerta" (the name comes from the location of the butterfly garden) reported in the social media.

The planned development of the square with a total area of 554 square meters includes infrastructure that will make it friendly for butterflies: attractive species of flowers and bushes, as well as insect hotels. Plans include planting dense and sparse grasses, among which solar lighting imitating fireflies will be installed. There will also be benches, a wooden installation with the word "butterfly" in several languages, as well as paving slabs with yard games. In the centre of the square there will be an ornamental cherry, next to which a plaque informing of the students' initiative will be placed.

It was thanks to the involvement of students of the Jagiellonian University that the new green space could be created. They organized a collection on the crowdfunding platform and raised over 23,000 zlotys for the development of the square. The project was co-financed by the Municipal Greenery Authority.

Scheduling the opening of the garden for the beginning of September was not accidental. "It will mark the symbolic end of the academic year and the beginning of the next one" - said Piotr Kempf, director of the Municipal Greenery Authority. He added that with their involvement the students showed all Cracowers how green connects people. "We hope that such initiatives will become a standard in our city and the square +At the corner of Dekerta+ will be the first of many such projects" - said the director.

Zabłocie is an area in Podgórze district on the Vistula. The city of Kraków has been striving to revitalize this post-industrial area for years. This area is the home of the Museum of the Oskar Schindler's Factory, MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University. Apartment buildings are being built and trendy establishments are opening in the area. (PAP)
