The best academic and scientific books awarded in Warsaw

The book "Medycyna rodzinna" ("Family Medicine") won the main prize in the competition for the best academic and scientific book ACADEMIA 2017. The awards were presented on Friday in Warsaw during the 11th edition of the Academic and Scientific Book Fair.

ACADEMIA is a academic and scientific books competition open to all Polish publishers, who offer scientific books, academic textbooks and monographs. According to organizers of the event, over 130 entries from 50 publishing houses were submitted to the competition.

Laureates received the awards on Friday during the 11th edition of the Academic and Scientific Book Fair in Warsaw. The book "Medycyna rodzinna" ("Family Medicine") by J. Bożydar Latkowski, Witold Lukas and Maciej Godecki-Ćwirko won the main prize. The publisher of the winning book is the Medical Publishing House PZWL.

ACADEMIA 2017 jury also awarded the publications: "Teoria i praktyka planowania przestrzennego. Urbanistyka Europy" ("Theory and practice of spatial planning. European Urbanism") by Jan Maciej Chmielewski (Publishing House of Warsaw University of Technology) and "Chopin 2. Uchwycić nieuchwytne" ("Chopin 2. Capture the elusive") by Mieczysław Tomaszewski (Polish Music Publishing House and National Fryderyk Chopin Institute). In addition, special awards for the editorial work were given to: "Typografia Kompletna. Kultura książki w twórczości Leona Urbańskiego" ("Complete Typography. Book culture in the works of Leon Urbanski") by Ewa Repucho (Publishing House ATUT) and "Typografia publikacji pochodzących z drukarń Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego 1674-1819" ("Typography of publications from the Jagiellonian University Press 1674-1819") Klaudia Sochy (Jagiellonian University Press).

In addition to the main prize, the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology Award for the best scholarly publication in the field of technical and scientific sciences was also awarded. It went to the authors of the book "Grafen. Otrzymywanie, charakterystyka, zastosowania" ("Graphene. Obtaining, characteristics, applications"): Andrzej Huczko, Magdalena Kurcz and Agnieszka Dąbrowska. The book was published by the Publishing House of the University of Warsaw.

The University of Warsaw Rector\'s Award was given for the best academic publication in the field of social sciences and the humanities. It went to the book "Europejczycy i Afrykanie. Wzajemne odkrycia i pierwsze kontakty" ("Europeans and Africans. Mutual discoveries and first contacts") by Michał Tymowski, published by the Scientific Publishing House of Nicolaus Copernicus University.

Two equal Prof. Jerzy Skowronek Awards for the best book in the field of history and archives were also presented. They were awarded for Michal Mencelf\'s book "Anastazy Raczyński (1788-1874). Bibliografia" ("Anastazy Raczyński (1788-1874). Bibliography") published by the scientific publishing house of Adam Mickiewicz University and "Bośnia i Hercegowina: determinanty dziejów. Pomiędzy Serbami, Chorwatami a supremacją muzułmanów" ("Bosnia and Herzegovina: the determinants of history. Between the Serbs, the Croats and the Muslim supremacy") by Danuta Gibas-Krzak, published by the Stanislaw Podobiński Publishing House of Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa.

"Dziennik Gazeta Prawna" also gave its awards in the ECOMOMICUS competition. Prizes are awarded to publishers whose economic publications stand out from the competition due to their high level of content and editorial work.

The winner in the category of the best economic book was "Paradoks euro" ("The euro paradox") published by Poltex, written by Stefan Kawalc and Ernest Pytlarczyk. Monika Bryl\'s book "Rynek sztuki w Polsce. Poradnik dla kolekcjonerów i inwestorów" ("The Art Market in Poland, Collector\'s and Investor\'s Guide") published by PWN won the award for the best economic guide. First place in the category of foreign translation of the economic book went to the publishing house Heterodox for the book "The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths" by Mariana Mazzucato.

The TECHNICUS award for the best technical book in a competition organized by the Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations NOT was not awarded this year.

During the ceremony, the Librarian Association Awards were also presented. The title of the Librarian of the Year 2016 went to Urszula Kopeć-Zaborniak - director of the Municipal Public Library in Cieszanów.

The 11th ACADEMIA Academic and Scientific Book Fair has been organized by: the Publishing House of the University of Warsaw, Warsaw University of Technology Publishing House and Murator EXPO. As before, it accompanies the Warsaw Book Fair at the National Stadium. It will continue until Sunday; 20 exhibitors participate - publishers of scientific publications, academic textbooks and popular science books.
