Deputy Prime Minister Gowin opened the Poland Study Centre in Chengdu, China

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science Jarosław Gowin opened on Thursday in the Chinese city of Chengdu the Poland Study Centre at the Sichuan University. In his view, it will be a place where young Chinese will learn about our country.

Gowin\'s visit to China started last Monday. In Beijing, Deputy Prime Minister met with representatives of the Chinese government and the rectors of Beijing universities. On Thursday, he flew to Chengdu, in the central part of the country.

At the opening ceremony of the Centre he spoke to Chinese scientists and students, as well as Poles studying at the university. He stressed that the Sichuan province is a very important region for Poland, because this is where the New Silk Road begins, which, according to the plans of the Chinese government, will end in Poland.

"Today another sign of our cooperation appears in Chengdu - the Poland Study Centre. It will be a place where young people, young Chinese people will be able to learn about Poland, and in the future also learn Polish" - said Gowin.

According to Deputy Prime Minister, Poles and the Chinese people have in common not only learning foreign languages, but also economic issues. "China can be a model for Poland when it comes to economic development and innovation, but Poland too can offer the knowledge and cooperation in research and higher education" - he said.

Jarosław Gowin remarked that the Centre will not only teach the Polish language, but its students will also gain expertise in many areas relating to Poland and Central and Eastern Europe.

"I am convinced that for many Chinese students studying at the Poland Study Centre will open the way to an international career, to developing the Chinese economy, science and culture in cooperation with Poland" - said Gowin.

In China, he also met with the Minister of Education Chen Baosheng. "During the meeting with the minister, both sides declared efforts to increase academic exchange. I hope that many students from the Sichuan University will visit the University of Warsaw and other Polish universities" - Gowin said on Thursday. He added that cooperation should not be limited only to student exchange, but should also include the exchange of university staff.

According to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sichuan Province is a priority for Poland because of the huge market (80 million inhabitants), less competition from other EU countries, existing railway connection with Łódź, the favour of the local authorities, the recent opening of the Consulate General and the desire to develop contacts with Poland.

Sichuan University is one of the elite Chinese universities. It educates approx. 70 thousand students. Currently it its 120th founding anniversary.

Deputy Prime Minister Gowin in China previously attended, among others, the meeting of the EU and Chinese ministers of education and higher education, and the ministers meeting in the "16+1" format (China and Central and Eastern Europe). He met with Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu Yandong, who said that China would spend $ 20 million on a joint Polish-Chinese research project. He also visited Tsinghua University, one of the best universities, which belongs to the C9 League of nine elite Chinese universities.
