Gowin: China will transfer $ 20 million for a research project with a Poland

The Chinese government has decided to transfer $ 20 million for a Polish-Chinese research project - Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Science and Higher Education Jarosław Gowin told PAP on Wednesday in Beijing. He added that these funds could go to projects in the space and mining industries.

Gowin\'s visit to China started last Monday. In Beijing, he met with representatives of the Chinese government and universities. As the head of the science ministry told PAP, the conversation with Deputy Prime Minister Liu Yandong concerned the strengthening of the Polish-Chinese cooperation, not only in science, but also the economy.

"Deputy Prime Minister said that after the Warsaw visit of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government decided to allocate $ 20 million to a joint Polish-Chinese research project. The scientific community will select the research field. I suggested that two sectors would be a natural choice. The first is space research. The Chinese have major achievements in this area, and we want to develop space research and space industry" - said Gowin.

He added that the second area in which the Polish-Chinese project can be implemented, is mining. "For China, as well as for Poland, coal is the primary source of energy. The achievements of Polish scientists when it comes to, for example, modern coal combustion technologies, are highly valued in the world. The Chinese also have big achievements in this respect" - said Deputy Prime Minister.

He said that after returning to Warsaw he would want to quickly conclude these talks. According to the agreement on strategic partnership and the cooperation agreement, the scientific body responsible for cooperation on the Polish side will be the National Centre for Research and Development - noted Gowin.

Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that the current Polish-Chinese research projects are "in their infancy". "From the Chinese side the position of the President Xi Jinping is certainly crucial, as the Chinese universities are focused on the implementation of government programs. I am convinced that now, within the framework of this joint project, we can carry out not a single research project, but several projects" - he said.

Gowin said that so far Polish universities were interested in China only in terms of attracting Chinese students. "This is a direction that I would like to strengthen. At the same time, at the next meeting of the conference of rectors of Polish academic schools I will emphasise what an opportunity the cooperation with Chinese scientists is for Polish science" - he said.

During his stay in China Gowin met, among others, with the Minister of Education Chen Baosheng. The aim of the visit was the development of Polish-Chinese relations in the areas of economy, science and space technology.

An important element of the visit was also strengthening the cooperation between Polish and Chinese universities. In Beijing, Deputy Prime Minister attended the meeting of ministers of education and higher education EU-China. He visited also Tsinghua Universityand the Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

Deputy Minister Gowin visited also Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan province. He met with the authorities of the region and visit the Sichuan University; scheduled events included a meeting with students, university authorities and the opening of the Poland Study Centre.
