Prof. Zembala is president-elect of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

Former minister of health, director of the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze Prof. Marian Zembala became president-elect of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) during the annual meeting of the organization that took place on 1 - 5 October in Barcelona.

The Silesian Center for Heart Diseases announced the nomination last week on Tuesday.

Born in 1950 in Krzepice, Prof. Marian Zembala is a cardiac surgeon and transplantologist, former student of Prof. Zbigniew Religa, whom he assisted during the first successful heart transplant. In 1997 he was the first in Poland to conduct transplantation of a single lung, and in 2001, also as Poland\'s first, he successfully transplanted both lungs and heart in a patient.

Since 1993 he heads the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze - one of the leading institutions of this profile in the country. He is a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and former national consultant in the field of cardiac surgery.

From June to November 2015 he was the health minister in the government of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz (PO), currently he is a Civic Platform deputy.
