Ranking of the world's best universities: Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw dropped to the last, fifth hundred

Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw are the only Polish universities included in the so-called Shanghai rankings (Academic Ranking of World Universities - ARWU), the list of the world\'s 500 best universities. Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw were in the fifth hundred of the ranking. In previous years they were in the fourth hundred.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) - also known as the Shanghai List, is published since 2003. It was originally compiled and issued by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, now it is published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. This year, for the 14th time, the best university in the world was the American Harvard University, followed by other American universities: Stanford and the University of California at Berkeley. The best European university is Cambridge in the UK, which moved up this year to the 4th place (it was 5th last year).

The only Polish universities included in the ranking - University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian University - recorded a noticeable drop for the first time almost since the beginning of the ranking. For more than a decade both the University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian had places in the fourth hundred of the ranking. This year they took places in the last hundred of the ranking (a group of universities with positions from 401 to 500).

The exact place of university in the ranking is known only in the case of the world\'s best 100 universities. Other universities are mentioned only in groups of 50 or 100 universities.

The Shanghai Ranking is compiled based on several indicators. Factors taken into account include the number of graduates or employees who have received the Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of the most frequently cited researchers, the number of publications in journals "Nature" and "Science", the number of publications listed in the selected citation indexes (Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index). The size of achievements is evaluated in relation to the size of the university. The ranking takes into account more than 1,000 universities, 500 of which appear in the list.
