Scientific bird ringing network established

Six scientific institutions and non-governmental organizations that organize bird ringing throughout Poland are the members of the scientific National Network of Bird Ringing Stations (Krajowa Sieć Stacji Obrączkowania Ptaków, KSSOP). Establishment of the network will facilitate cooperation between naturalists and help them raise money for projects.

The network members are: the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Białystok, the Faculty of Biology of the University of Gdańsk, the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the Jagiellonian University, the Baltic Sea Action Foundation (Branch Kaliszany), Silesian Ornithological Society and the Carpatica Association. Until now, these institutions have formed an informal association. "Establishment of a scientific network will allow them to enhance cooperation and help raise money for projects" - said the University of Białystok spokeswoman, Katarzyna Dziedzik.

Members of the network they want to conduct joint research and harmonize the rules of operation of bird ringing stations - so that the same standards apply to collecting and recording data about birds. In the future they also want to implement a nationwide Large-Area Migratory Birds Monitoring program, based on the work of the field bird ringing stations.

In the station Action Siemianówka alone (organized by the Scientific Association of Biologists of the University of Białystok) in 2015 almost 5 thousand birds of 71 species were ringed, including pallid harrier, Blyth\'s reed warbler, boreal owls, pygmy owls, white-backed woodpeckers, kingfishers and all domestic species of flycatcher.

According to the organizers - this year may be even more interesting, because of the higher water level in the reservoir. Field work will begin on 1 August and continue until mid-October. As usual, all bird enthusiasts can participate in Action Siemianówka. Details about the campaign are available on the website.
