ELA will help monitor the careers of graduates

New system that uses databases of ZUS and POL-on will help monitor the careers of graduates. The first reports from the system, for graduates of 2014, were presented on May 18 at the Ministry of Science.

National monitoring system of the economic situation of graduates (ELA) has been developed by scientists from the Educational Research Institute, University of Warsaw (IBE UW). The tool that allows you to track the economic situation of graduates of all Polish universities.

Work on the system began six years ago. Dr. Mikołaj Jasiński of IBE UW explained that this solution allows to check the time a graduate spent looking for a job, the scale of graduate unemployment and the dynamics of wages, taking into account the graduate\'s major. According to Jasiński, the system provides reliable data, and presents them in a manner not only professionals can understand.

In the current, first edition the system generated and released more than 7 thousand reports on people who completed studies in 2014. Their reports were based on data from the social insurance data for the period until 30 September 2015. The reports included the division of graduates by I and II degree studies and uniform masters.

According to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Science and Higher Education Jarosław Gowin, the ELA system is an indication for the university candidates. "The reports are an equally valuable indication for the universities themselves, because over time they will reflect the effectiveness of teaching. I think these results will have an important impact on the internal system of quality assurance and adapting programs to the needs of the labour market" - he believes.

He added that studies conducted in the framework of the system will indicate the educational policy the ministry should implement.

Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Dr. Piotr Dardziński emphasised that the system is cheap, because the reports are based on existing data from the system POL-on (collecting data on students) and the social insurance data. Until now, in order to monitor the careers of graduates universities commissioned surveys, costing on average approx. 200-300 thousand zlotys.

The ELA "tells us that basically there is a great potential in completing university studies. Those who graduate, as a rule, find a job more quickly and earn more, and the dynamics of their income is higher" - said Dardziński.

Deputy Minister noted, however, that because for now the ELA system reports concern only one year of students, they do not yet show career trends. In subsequent years, the system will allow to compare the data for different years of graduates.

When asked about the course of study candidates should choose based on the data from the ELA system, Deputy Minister Dardziński suggested to choose the major consistent with one\'s own passion, but also take into account the risks, for example low wages. He also reminded that technical sciences offer the highest salaries and the lowest risk of unemployment.

Deputy Minister Dardziński announced that the Ministry of Science would now analyse the reports.

Further reports will be available next year. They will concern students who graduated in 2015.
