Racing car designed by students of Białystok University of Technology will compete in the biggest automotive event for students - Formula Student in England, and then on tracks in Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary. The competition will begin on 14 July.

Formula Student is a competition of teams from technical universities and faculties all over the world. Their task is to design or design, build, and then race in a prototype race. Throughout the year, cars constructed by students race on eleven Formula 1 tracks.

Last Wednesday at the car presentation, project coordinator Adam Zalewski said that Formula Student is the biggest competition, which this year attracted more than 500 teams from all over the world.

Białystok University of Technology students will race in the car CMS-03. This is the third vehicle built at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. According to Zalewski, the car is the result of a two-year process of designing and building, carried out by a 30-strong team of students - Cerberus MotorSport.

The project coordinator said that several changes have been made to the car to eliminate defects that occurred in previous vehicles. He added that CMS-03 is much lighter than its predecessors, and an innovative solution was the use of aerodynamic package made of carbon fibre.

The car weighs approx. 210 kg and has a 89 horsepower engine, that is - according to engineers - 37 horsepower more than the previous car. This will allow to reach 100 km per hour in 3.5 seconds. The car also has lower centre of gravity and uses an extensive system that allows to record dozens of different parameters while driving. "With these changes, more thoughtful design, this season will be more revolutionary" - said Szymon Kucharski from the team.

During the event the car will be tested in several competitions. The most important, but also the most difficult task - as the students themselves noted - will be to complete two laps with compulsory change of drivers (a requirement of the competition is that drivers are selected from among the engineers). In addition, the car will be checked for speed achieved on a short distance and cornering, so-called figure 8. The jury will also assess engineering solutions used in the vehicle and the vehicle cost valuation.

Białystok University of Technology students have been successful in international competitions, including several victories of their Martian rovers in the prestigious competition organized in the Mars base analogue in the desert in Utah, USA. Rector of the university Lech Dzienis called the students the "driving force behind the university" - they build rovers, aircraft, educational robots.
