American cardiologist Prof. Paul Alfred Gurbel received an honorary doctorate from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. The title was awarded in recognition of the scientist’s contribution to the development of cardiology and his contribution to the Nicolaus Copernicus University Medical College.

Honorary doctorate was presented during the university celebration, traditionally celebrated on February 19, birthday of the university patron Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543).

"Prof. Gurbel is an outstanding scientist, who deals with issues related to blood clotting, and an undisputed authority in cardiology. The scientific world knows him primarily for his publications on platelets and their role in coronary artery disease. His groundbreaking research has played a key role in the introduction of new drugs that inhibit platelet aggregation" - said in eulogy Prof. Jacek Kubica, promoter and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical College.

The promoter said that Prof. Gurbel demonstrated and explained the mechanisms of resistance to standard therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction, which resulted in changes in treatment strategies for patients undergoing coronary artery unblocking procedures.

"His pioneering studies clarified, for example, how knowledge of genotype and various clinical factors can be used to optimise the treatment of patients at high risk of cardiovascular complications. The professor is considered to be the creator of a completely new concept of coronary heart disease pharmacotherapy, referred to as personalized antipaletet therapy. It involves the selection of treatment based on the assessment of individual response to drugs. The essence of this concept is to balance the risk of bleeding and ischemic complications" - said Prof. Kubica.

The promoter noted that Prof. Gurbel was the initiator and principal investigator of many clinical trials, which charted new directions in the development of cardiology.

Prof. Gurbel is 57. He received medical education at leading American universities. For many years he worked at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, where was head of the research center and scientific development program director. From September 2015. Prof. Gurbel is the director of the Inova Center for Thrombosis Research and Drug Development at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute in Fairfax. Currently he is also a professor at John Hopkins University in Baltimore and Duke University in Durham.

The scientist cooperated with a number of medical centres worldwide, including the Clinic of Cardiology and Internal Diseases, Nicolaus Copernicus University Medical College in Bydgoszcz, resulting in numerous research projects. He participated in scientific conferences in Bydgoszcz and Toruń.

After receiving the title of doctor honoris causa, Prof. Gurbel said he was honoured to receive the title in the homeland of his grandparents, and as an American of Polish descent he was extremely proud of his roots.

During the Nicolaus Copernicus University celebration, Convallaria Copernicana (Lily of the Copernicus) was awarded to Prof. Anna-Boroń Balcar, who until her retirement in 2000 worked in Bydgoszcz Medical Academy (now the Nicolaus Copernicus University Medical College). She specialised in paediatrics, but also kidney and urinary disorders, birth defects, and haematology.

Convallaria Copernicana award is granted by the Nicolaus Copernicus University Senate for outstanding contribution to science or special contributions to the development of the university. The name of the awards comes from the lily of the valley, with which Copernicus appears on several portraits. Laureates receive a statuette of silver-plated bronze, depicting a fragment of the heliocentric system and work "De Revolutionibus" surrounded by lilies of the valley. The statuette was designed by sculptor Prof. Alicja Majewska from the Nicolaus Copernicus University Institute of Arts.

25 thousand students study at 17 faculties of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, including nearly 19.5 thousand at Toruń campus and more than 5.5 thousand at the Bydgoszcz campus. Among the students are almost 400 foreigners from 28 countries. The university educates more than 950 graduate students - more than 760 in Toruń and more than 180 in Bydgoszcz. Nicolaus Copernicus University employs 4057 people, including 2080 academic teachers.
