Dr. Jakub Fichna received the Rising Star Award

Dr. Jakub Fichna - President of the Academy of Young Scientists - received the Rising Star Award, awarded jointly by the National Societies Committee and the Scientific Committee of United European Gastroenterology. He is the first Pole to receive this award.

Rising Star Award is awarded annually to 8-10 scientists involved in clinical trials, with proven international achievements, conducting high-quality research and exhibiting scientific independence.

In 2015, the committees distinguished 8 people from Germany, Poland, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium. Dr. Jakub Fichna, MD, is the first Pole to receive the UEG Rising Star Award.

Fichna is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Medical University of Lodz. He is also President of the Academy of Young Scientists of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The topic of his research work are the issues of physiology and pathophysiology of the digestive system. He designs and synthesises potential new drugs, determines their biological characteristics, and studies the mechanisms underlying inflammatory and functional diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

In 2015, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences - Prof. Jerzy Duszyński - awarded him the Prize of the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences for identification of new potential pharmacological targets and developing new forms of treatment of functional and inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
