Polish team with a medal at the world programming contest

The team from the University of Warsaw won bronze in the finals of the 34th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC), which ended on May 20 in Morocco.

128 students from all over the world competed in the finals in Marrakesh, Morocco. Each team had one computer and five hours to solve 13 algorithmic problems. The competition jury awarded 4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals. First place went to the team from the ITMO University in St. Petersburg in Russia, who has managed to solve all the tasks. They won the prize of 16.5 thousand dollars.

The University of Warsaw was represented by three students from the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Mechanics. The team members were: Marek Sommer, Błażej Magnowski and Kamil Dębowski and, the team supervisor was Prof. Jan Madey. The team solved 9 tasks and won 12th place, which was awarded a bronze medal and $ 2.2 thousand prize. In addition, the team was praised for being the first to two of the assigned problems.

More than 38 thousand students from 101 countries participated in qualifying rounds for this year\'s event. 128 teams advanced to the finals, including the representation of the University of Warsaw for the 21st time in a row. "No other university in the world can boast being in the world finals start every since the first time they competed" - commented on the UW website.

Finals are the final stage of many months of preparation: weekly trainings, training camps in the country and abroad. UW representatives are beneficiaries of the project Masters of Algorithms in the programme Generation of the Future of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

In this year\'s finals, in addition to the UW team, Poland was also represented by teams from the Jagiellonian University and the University of Wrocław. These teams also took places in the top twenty, but failed to win medals.

ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) is organized by the Association for Computing Machinery, an association of IT practitioners and theorists. It is the oldest, most prestigious and largest in terms of number of participants such competition in the world. University teams from around the world compete for the title. Finalists are selected in regional qualifying rounds on all inhabited continents. Next finals will be held in Thailand.
