International award for Prof. Edward Czerwiński

Prof. Edward Czerwiński from the Jagiellonian University Medical College received the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) President’s Award for outstanding contribution in Central Europe in the field of research on osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases. He is the first Pole to receive this award.

The award is given annually to representatives from different continents for their outstanding achievements in the fight against osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases. Researcher from the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College is the first recipient of this award from Eastern Europe.

Prof. Czerwiński received the award at the recently concluded IOF-ESCEO World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases in Milan, Italy.

Prof. Edward Czerwiński, Head of the Bone and Joint Diseases Department, Medical College of the Jagiellonian University is a practicing physician, active university lecturer and social activist. He specialises in bone and joint diseases for 40 years. He was one of the pioneers of osteoporosis research in Poland and over two decades he completed a number of projects in the field of epidemiology of osteoporosis, secondary osteoporosis, falls and fractures in Poland, resulting in a unique database of more than 100 thousand cases.

He currently participates in the work of, among others, European Osteoporosis Summit for Central Europe and the European League Against Rheumatism. He cooperates closely with organizations in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus and Romania, active in the fight against osteoporosis.

Prof. Czerwiński founded the Kraków branch of Polish Osteoporosis Foundation, the Polish Osteoarthrology Society and the European Osteoporosis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Foundation; he is also the founder of the portal Osteoporoza.pl.

He organized 17 seminars and conferences in the field of orthopaedics and osteoporosis. Since 1997 he has been organizing the Central European Congress on Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis in Kraków. The next event will be held in late September this year.

Currently, Prof. Czerwiński endeavours to implement the Fracture Liaison Service in Poland. The first centre was opened in February. Two more are planned by the end of the year.
