Expert in the field of international criminal law, Prof. Jan C. Joerden received on Friday an honorary doctorate from the Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU). German scientist has been cooperating with the Poznań university for over 20 years.

The AMU Senate took the decision to grant him the highest academic honour on December 22, 2014, at the request of the Faculty of Law and Administration.

The issues to which the German scholar devoted his studies include international criminal law, legal philosophy and ethics, as well as ethics and philosophy of medicine. Prof. Joerden was also one of the initiators of opening the Polish-German legal studies. His efforts contributed to the establishment of Collegium Polonicum in Słubice, a joint project Adam Mickiewicz University and the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder).

"Professor Jan C. Joerden deserves the reputation of one of the pioneers of scientific cooperation between Germany and Poland. His efforts were based on a deep conviction that cooperation not only serves science, but also brings together nations, being a contribution to a better mutual understanding. He is an advocate of replacing walls with bridges" - said during the ceremony the honorary doctorate promoter Prof. Andrzej J. Szwarc.

He added that in the course of over 20 years of professor’s cooperation with the AMU, many intercollegiate research projects were created, including projects implemented jointly with the ministries of justice, law enforcement and judiciary institutions in both countries.

Prof. Joerden’s long-term cooperation with the AMU was recognized in 2004, when he received the medal "For Services to the Adam Mickiewicz University".

"Collegium Polonicum was the first, along with its students and staff, to observe, and on the academic level even co-create, the progress in the process of European unification" - said Prof. Joerden, receiving the honorary degree.

Thanking for the award, he also referred to the history of both countries and emphasized that the universal dimension of science is "above difficult history".

"From the German perspective, it is almost a miracle to be in Poland and to receive such a friendly welcome as it is in my case. That in the country, which as the first and for the longest time suffered the ravages of war, I am awarded such a high honour, and it is in the city of Poznań, where during the German occupation the Heinrich Himmler’s hate speeches gave an excuse to commit the most heinous crimes" - he said .

Poznań university rector Prof. Bronisław Marciniak emphasized that versatility and interdisciplinary nature of research, global scientific reputation, organization of many international research projects and the list of positions held in German and international scientific bodies make Prof. Joerden "a model committed scholar-humanist, totally dedicated to the service of the eternal ideals of truth, goodness and beauty".

Prof. Joerden was born in 1953 in Essen. He was a university professor in Berlin, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Jena, Trier and in South Africa, Japan and Turkey. He works at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). His scientific achievement is over 200 publications, including 5 monographs and 44 books of collective studies that were published under his editorship.

Prof. Jan C. Joerden joined the group of 134 honorary doctors of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He is the 18th scholar and the fourth German lawyer to receive an honorary doctorate at the initiative of the Faculty of Law and Administration. (PAP)
