Jagiellonian University opens the Central European Studies

Institute of Slavonic Studies of the Jagiellonian University will launch new Central European Studies in the coming academic year in cooperation with the Charles University in Prague, Comenius University in Bratislava and the University of Ljubljana.

New masters (second degree) with mainly philological profile will launch in October. In Poland, in addition to the Institute of Slavonic Studies, the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University is a partner of the new course.

Graduates will receive two diplomas, one from the Jagiellonian University, the other from the foreign university, where they will take one or two semesters. Candidates must speak Czech or Slovak, because will be educated at the faculties of philology in Prague or Bratislava. Under the same agreement, students from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia will study at the university in Kraków.

Director of the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the Jagiellonian University, Dr. Magdalena Dyras told PAP that the new program of study will focus primarily on linguistics and literature of Central Europe, but will also include issues related to the history and culture of the region.

"The idea of a Central European studies was born 7 years ago and since then we have been working on its implementation. Since our initiative brings together four international universities, formalities took a long time" - explained Dyras.

Another university in Kraków - the Pedagogical University - announced that next year it will launch similar masters in cooperation with Charles University in Prague: German Studies and Central European Studies.

The course at the Pedagogical, in contrast to that at the Jagiellonian University, will have primarily historical profile.
