Research station of the Polish Academy of Sciences was officially opened in Kiev last Friday. It is the seventh such institution abroad. Poland and Ukraine now carry out more than 60 joint research projects involving hundreds of scientists.

"This is yet another important moment in the Polish-Ukrainian scientific cooperation. While in the past three years we carried out 50 research projects, now we are going to carry out 68. If we consider that each project involves several people on both sides, we have hundreds of scientists who are engaged the cooperation" - told PAP President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Michał Kleiber.

Representation of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Ukraine has been active for two years, but only now the research station in the country has been official opened. It is headed by Prof. Henryk Sobczuk from Lublin.

"It is currently very important for scientific, cultural, and - I have to say - political reasons. The atmosphere around this cooperation is amazingly positive" - said Kleiber.

In the opinion of the PAS President, relations with Poland are very important for the Ukrainian scientists.

"This partnership is very comprehensive, it is not focused on any priority. We are active in the fields including linguistics, as well as physics" - he noted.

According to Kleiber, Ukrainians are partners who have a lot to say in the world of science, but they also have a limited ability to promote their ideas abroad.

"Science today requires reaching certain critical mass. Science has become very complex, interdisciplinary, but also very expensive. Today, not only the countries that are in such a difficult situation as Ukraine, but also countries such as Poland, are forced to work together. And that is why the competence of Ukrainian scientists, which in some areas is indisputable, is very valuable for us" - said the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences in an interview with PAP.

Polish Academy of Sciences currently has seven research stations abroad - in addition to the station in Kiev, there are also stations in Berlin, Brussels, Moscow, Paris, Rome and Vienna.
