Polish students of geophysics best in the world

Paulina Kotlarek from the Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) in Poznań and Bartosz Gierlach from AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (AGH) won the finals of the SEG Challenge Bowl - the world\'s largest knowledge contest for students of geophysics.

Rivals in the competition organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists are teams from over two hundred universities around the world, including leading universities in the US, China, Canada, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany, Colombia and Italy. Competing teams are composed of two students of geophysics.

The competition in Denver (US), Polish pair was unbeatable in the semi-finals, reaching the final stage with the highest score. With even level in the finals, the excitement lasted until the very end. Before the last question, the Polish team was losing by 8 points. But the AMU and AGH team was first to the last question and won 10 points, beating the team from Columbia. The title of the best students of geophysics in the world in 2014 belongs to Poland.

For Bartosz Gierlach this is yet another international success. As a high school student he represented Poland three times at international geography Olympiads. In 2010, he was gold medalist of the world competition in Taiwan. Student Geophysical Society GEOPHONE at AGH, which he represents, is also among the nominees for the prestigious title of the world’s best geophysical scientific club. GEOPHONE won the title in 2012, and took third place last year.
