Gdańsk University of Technology will have a new supercomputer

Gdańsk University of Technology signed an agreement for the delivery supercomputer worth PLN 30 million. The entire system will be built by the end of this year. This will be the first machine in Poland capable of performing a quadrillion mathematical operations per second.

The computer supplier will be a consortium of the companies Megatel and Action.

The consortium representative Olaf Bialek told journalists after the signing of the agreement that the machine in the form of a cluster, or a group of connected computers, will consist of more than 2.6 thousand processors. The whole machine will be housed in 30 cabinets and will weigh approx. 15 tons.

Jerzy Proficz from the Academic Computer Centre in Gdańsk explained that the computer will be the fastest computing machine in Poland, capable of performing a quadrillion (1 000 000 000 000 000) mathematical operations per second.

Proficz said that the equipment will be used in many fields - from physics and chemistry to medicine. He explained that the device will be used, for example, to carry out virtual physical and chemical experiments, which can be performed cheaper and faster in the computer than in reality.

The equipment, which will be the central part of the project Centre of Excellence for Scientific Application Manufacturing Infrastructure at Gdańsk University of Technology, will also be used for the analysis of sound recordings and images. The latter functionality will be used, inter alia, in endoscopy: the computer will analyse the recordings from gastrointestinal tract examinations and identify images that suggest the occurrence of adverse changes in the body.

After the supercomputer is delivered to the university at the end of the year, it will work together with its predecessor built in 2011. The university PG rector, Prof. Henryk Krawczyk told journalists that the three-year hardware is about ten times slower than the new acquisition.
