PLN 15 million for young researchers in the Diamond Grant programme

Studies on the changes of states of attention in the creative process and on art rock in Tanzania - these are some of the student research projects that will receive funding in the Diamond Grant programme. Ministry of Science has allocated PLN 15 million to this edition.

Representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education reported on the results of the competition in the release sent to PAP. This year, funding will be awarded to 86 research projects carried out by outstanding students at Polish universities and institutes.

Among the winners of the third edition of the programme are young scientists who will study rock art in Kondoa, Tanzania, attention state changes in the creative process, the phenomenon of crowdsourcing, model of easy to read Polish text and the response of tumour cells to photodynamic therapy.

Winners may spend the funds awarded in the programme on research and on the minimum wage of PLN 2.5 thousand per month. Awarded young researchers represent three areas of science: humanities and social sciences, natural sciences and medicine, science and technical sciences.

"Diamond Grant opens the door to career in science. This unique program is addressed to young people who are already in college and are ready to independently conduct research and begin work on a doctorate" – commented Prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobińska, Minister of Science and Higher Education. "Each year, a hundred outstanding students can receive up to PLN 200 thousand to finance their research projects carried out at Polish universities and institutes. This way we support the true diamonds of Polish science" - added the Minister.

First edition of the Diamond Grant competition was settled in 2012. Since then, 300 outstanding students have become the winners of the programme. Diamond Grant, in addition to providing funds for research, opens the way to faster doctorate for students. Students may become managers of their own research project even after undergraduate course or after the third year of MA course. Since the beginning of the programme, the government has allocated PLN 50 million to the development of the careers of young scientists.

The research subjects were evaluated by experts primarily in terms of their scientific value. The jury also took into account the students’ achievements. The legitimacy of the planned costs and the feasibility of the project also affected the assessment.
